MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The University of Toledo women's track and field team finished day one at the MAC Indoor Championships on Friday with an exciting finish in the distance medley relay.
The distance medley relay team of Emily Vining, Rayna Horner, Madeline Vining, and Semra Karaslan came within a tenth of a second of taking first place. With less than 200 meters to go, Karaslan was able to take the team from fourth to the second with a photo-finishing time of 11:38.18. Bowling Green took first with a time of 11:38.02.
"The highlight of the day was the women's distance medley relay," said Head Coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. "We put our best lineup on the track, and they really delivered for us."
Freshman Promise Cross started the first day off strong in the pentathlon but ended up seventh with 3309 points. At the end of four rounds, Cross was sitting in first after setting a personal-best in the high jump with a height of 1.68m and a personal-best in the shot put with a distance of 9.08m. Cross pushed herself to finish the 800m but had no energy left and finished the race in 10th with a time of 2:49.87.
"It's unfortunate that the last event of the day for Promise Cross was too rough for her to finish on top, but she had a great day, and we are excited to see where she goes in the future," said Grove-McDonough.
Toledo has 10 team points through the first day which puts the Rockets in ninth place. Akron leads with 44 points.
The Rockets will compete tomorrow in the final day of competition in the mile, 3000m, 4x400m, triple jump, and high jump, with the first event starting at 4:00 p.m.
