TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's basketball team hosts Miami on Wednesday, Feb. 17 in Mid-American Conference action. Wednesday's contest is scheduled to tip at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN3.

During tomorrow's game, Toledo will be highlighting former Rocket Latoja (Harris) Schaben as a part of Advancement of Blacks in Sports (ABIS) Historical Hidden Figures in Sports series during Black History Month.

A Varsity T Hall of Fame inductee, Schaben played at Toledo from 1991-94, earning MAC Player of the Year honors in 1992-93, the program's first African American conference player of the year honoree.. She finished her career with 1,466 points and 833 rebounds, both Top 10 numbers at the time of her graduation. Latoja still ranks first in Toledo and MAC history with a career field-goal percentage of 62.3 and she is second in school annals in career rebounding average (9.2 rebounds per game).

"Latoja is more than deserving of this honor," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "She is one of the best players to ever play at Toledo, her name is still all over our record book. But more than that, she is a kind, thoughtful, hard-working person. We're thrilled to have the opportunity to highlight Latoja for all she has done for our program and the game of basketball."

Latoja averaged 16.1 points per game during her career, including 21.1 per game in her MAC Player of the Year-winning season of 1992-93. She scored in double figures in all 28 games that year, the first player in school history to achieve that feat.

"Black History Month, to me, is a time to reflect and honor the legacies of African Americans and pay homage to our many accomplishments," Latoja said. "When I grew up we didn't have these types of opportunities that we have now to celebrate Black history. It's nice to have these opportunities to do so now."
After her days as a Rocket, Latoja played professionally in Portugal, Italy, Finland, and Turkey, averaging double figures in scoring and rebounding during her entire professional career.

Latoja is currently in her 22nd season as an assistant coach on the Iowa State women's basketball coaching staff, where she has helped lead the Cyclones to 18 postseason appearances, two Big 12 Championships, 12 NCAA Tournament berths and two trips to the Elite Eight. ISU has posted a record of 453-227 during her tenure in Ames. Latoja coaches under her former head coach at Toledo, Bill Fennelly.
