Toledo Hosts Loyola (Md.) Saturday Afternoon at Savage Arena

12/10/2021 2:20:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's basketball team hosts the Loyola (Md.) University Greyhounds on  Saturday, Dec. 11 at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN3 at Savage Arena.

Saturday will be the Rockets' Holiday Game, with a visit from Santa Claus and a teddy bear toss highlighting the day's festivities. Fans will be able to meet Santa on the west concourse from 12:30-3:30 p.m. All fans attending Saturday's game are also encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to toss on the court at halftime, which will then be collected and donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio.

Last Time Out

The Rockets (4-2) are coming off a convincing 86-33 win over St. Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday, the largest margin of victory since a school record-tying 57-point win over Iona in 2002.

All 11 Toledo players that played on Wednesday scored, with sophomore Nan Garcia leading the way with a career-high 20 points. Garcia had her best game as a Rocket against St. Francis, making 8-of-11 shots from the floor and all three of her three-point attempts.

Junior Sophia Wiard notched a double-double, the third of her career, scoring 15 points while collecting 10 rebounds in addition to dishing out five assists. Junior Quinesha Lockett (15) and sophomore Khera Goss (10) both reached double figures in scoring as well. Lockett stuffed the box score, adding six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in conjunction with her 15 points.

Toledo shot a scorching 57.1 percent from the field (36-for-63) and made 10-of-22 shots from beyond the arc, while St. Francis shot just 26.9 percent (14-for-52) and connected on 4-of-18 three-point shots. The Rockets also won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Red Flash 41-28.

Rocket Notes
  • Toledo and Loyola have only met once before, in the 1999-00 season in a game that UT won, 61-45, in Preseason WNIT competition.
  • The Rockets lead the MAC in scoring defense (59.33), scoring margin (+14.83), and FG% defense (35.3%).
  • There aren't many teams that take care of the ball as well as Toledo. UT leads the MAC and ranks 11th in the country in fewest turnovers (12.0/game).
  • Toledo committed just nine turnovers on Wednesday against St. Francis, a season-low.
  • Quinesha Lockett ranks fourth in the MAC in scoring (20.3 PPG) and ranks 17th in the country. She has scored at least 20 points in four of Toledo's six games this season.
  • Toledo has eclipsed 50% shooting in two of its last three games. UT shot 57.1% against St. Francis on Wednesday and shot 51.8% from the field in the win over Idaho State, the first time it has eclipsed 50% shooting since a game at Buffalo on Feb. 8, 2020 (55.8%).
  • Four Rockets have notched double-doubles this season: Jessica Cook (2), Quinesha Lockett (1), Nan Garcia (1), and Sophia Wiard (1).
  • Sophia Wiard has dished out 4.67 assists/game, putting her third in the MAC in that category.
  • Wiard led the MAC in assist/turnover ratio last season and sits atop the league again this season (3.11) and ranks 17th in the country.
About Loyola (Md.)
Loyola (3-6) comes into Saturday's game having lost four of its last five games, most recently suffering a 64-55 home loss to Morgan State on Wednesday. The Greyhounds have been the victims of some bad luck this year; half of their losses have been by just two points, and two of those three defeats came on last-second shots by their opponents.

Freshman Lex Therien has earned two Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards this season. The rookie is averaging 10.1 PPG and a team-best 9.7 RPG.
