CANCUN, Mexico – The University of Toledo women's basketball team fell to Seton Hall in overtime on Friday at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya, losing by a score of 68-63.
After trailing for much of the game, the Rockets (3-2) took a lead with less than three minutes to go in regulation, but two late free throws from Seton Hall (3-2) tied the score at 57-57 and sent the game into overtime. In the extra period, the Pirates scored the first points to take a lead and would not trail for the rest of the game.
"I was proud of our players tonight," head coach
Tricia Cullop said. "We took a really good Seton Hall team to overtime. I thought we showed a lot of fight today, but unfortunately we were short on a few shots. I thought we had our chances, we were just a couple possessions away from making it happen. I think this game made us better."
Sophomore
Nan Garcia tallied her first career double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. Junior
Quinesha Lockett was the Rockets' high scorer with 15 points and also accumulated three steals, and sophomore
Sammi Mikonowicz added 10 points and five rebounds. Junior
Sophia Wiard stuffed the stat sheet with six points, nine rebounds, and three assists.
Toledo edged Seton Hall on the glass, 46 to 41, and grabbed 15 offensive rebounds to the Pirates' eight. Seton Hall saw more shots fall from long range though, making 10 of its 30 three-pointers compared to UT, which shot just 4-of-24 from beyond the arc.
The Rockets wrap up their week at the Cancun Challenge with a record of 1-1.
Toledo's next game will be at home on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 11:00 a.m. against Saint Francis (Pa.). The game will be UT's annual Education Day game. More information on Education Day can be found at

1st Quarter
- The Rockets had plenty of opportunities on the offensive end, but made just two of their first 13 shots to start the game. On the other end, the Pirates knocked down four of their first eight shot attempts and took an early 10-5 lead.
- Despite having a subpar shooting quarter, Toledo held Seton Hall without a field goal for the final 4:38 of the first quarter and trailed by just one, 12-11, after the first 10 minutes of play.
2nd Quarter
- After a Seton Hall three-pointer opened the scoring in the second quarter, junior Hannah Noveroske collected back-to-back baskets to tie the score at 15-15 with 8:49 to go in the first half.
- Both teams traded scores for much of the second quarter, rendering the Rockets unable to overtake the Pirates on the scoreboard.
- Lockett knocked down a corner three with 2:28 to play, and sophomore Khera Goss scored on Toledo's next possession to trim the deficit to one, 29-28, with 1:48 to go in the second frame.
- Seton Hall scored the final five points of the half to take a 34-28 lead into the locker room.
3rd Quarter
- After a rough shooting first half, the Rockets made six of their first eight shots to open the third quarter and took a 40-39 lead after a jumper from Lockett at the 6:00 mark.
- Two Pirate free throws gave them a 41-40 advantage, but on the next UT possession senior Jayda Jansen drilled a wide-open three to put the Rockets up 43-41 with 4:34 to go in the quarter.
- The Pirates ended the third period on a 7-0 run to take a 50-47 lead into the final stanza.
4th Quarter
- Neither team scored until the 6:48 mark of the quarter, when Lockett made both of her free throw attempts to put the Rockets within one, 50-49.
- Trailing by four, Garcia powered her way to an and-one to bring Toledo within a point, and later Mikonowicz sliced through the Pirates' defense for a nifty bucket that gave the Rockets a 54-53 lead with 3:52 to go in the game.
- Seton Hall reclaimed the lead with a three-pointer from Lauren Park-Lane, but Mikonowicz answered right back with a trey to give the Rockets a 57-55 advantage and whip the UT bench into a frenzy.
- The final points of regulation came on free throws from Seton Hall's Andra Espinoza-Hunter at the 1:16 mark of the fourth quarter.
- Both teams had a chance to take the lead in the final minute of the game, but neither was successful, sending the game into OT.
Overtime
- Seton Hall's Park-Lane was fouled driving to the hoop and her basket was good, so once she connected on the free throw her three-point play gave her team a 60-57 lead.
- Garcia's jumper pushed the Rockets to within one, 60-69, with 3:04 to go in overtime, but that would be the closest they would get in the extra period.
- The Pirates extended their lead to 65-61 with 1:23 to play, and successfully stopped UT in the final minute to come away with the win.
