MUNCIE, Ind. – The University of Toledo women's volleyball team visited Ball State on Tuesday night and fell to the Cardinals in four sets.
The Rockets (15-6, 6-3 MAC) won the first set, but the Cardinals (18-3, 8-1 MAC) were able to pull ahead and win the next three to win the match and increase their lead in the MAC West.
Sophomore
Taylor Alt was productive on Tuesday, tallying 20 kills and nine digs, her third straight match with at least 20 terminations. Junior
Sina Uluave notched her third straight double-double and sixth of the season. Freshman
Elaine Redman contributed 46 assists and four blocks, while junior
Rhyenne Filisi added six blocks and five kills.
Toledo hits the road again this weekend for two matches at Northern Illinois.
1st Set (25-19, Toledo)
The Rockets played exceptionally well in the first set, hitting .324 while holding the Cardinals, the MAC's top hitting team, to a .029 attack percentage. Ball State initially took a 4-2 lead, and both teams traded points until a 5-0 run for UT put them ahead 11-7. Toledo would not trail for the rest of the first set, leading by as many as eight, 24-16, before Ball State closed the gap a bit with three straight points. Alt finished the Cardinals off with her seventh kill of the first set to give Toledo a 25-19 win.
2nd Set (25-19, Ball State)
Alt stayed hot at the start of the second set, tallying three of the Rockets' first four points, all on kills, to put her team ahead 4-2. Ball State flipped a switch, however, and began to pull away, using an 8-2 run to make the score 16-9. The Ball State lead grew to as many as 11, 23-12, but Toledo scored seven of the next eight points to make the gap more respectable before a service error handed the Cardinals the 25
th point and tied the match at 1-1.
3rd Set (26-24, Ball State)
The third set was a close one, but Toledo was able to take a late 22-16 lead after three straight Ball State miscues. The Cardinals didn't stay down for long, as they would go on to score seven straight points to turn a six-point deficit into a one-point lead, 23-22. A block from Filisi tied the score at 23-23, and a kill off the hand of Uluave tied it up again at 24-24, but Ball State scored the next two points to win and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
4th Set (25-20, Ball State)
Toledo and Ball State traded leads early in the fourth set, but BSU used an 8-2 run to take a 14-10 lead, which it would not relinquish. The Rockets were able to make things interesting late by pulling within one, 21-20, but the Cardinals scored the final four points of the night to win the fourth set 25-20 and win the match.
