NORFOLK, Va. – Junior third baseman Dayna Denner cracked a two-run homer in the first inning and later scored the winning run to lead the Toledo softball team to a 3-2 win over Radford on the first day of the Pirate Classic in Norfolk on Friday. Junior Erin Hunt was credited with the win, striking out nine in seven innings.

The game was tied, 2-2, when Denner scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth. She then was part of a crucial double play in the top of the seventh to secure the fourth win of the season for Toledo (4-2).

"Both teams made some nice plays and some mistakes, but at the end of the game we executed on offense and defense," said head coach Joe Abraham. "They made a couple of mistakes and that was the difference. Erin didn't have her best stuff but figured out a way through it. Morgan and Yenrick both got down great bunts in the sixth and Sam did her job with the sac fly. We got a huge double-play from Dayna and Raelyn in the top of the seventh and Leah made a great running catch to end the game. Just a really nice win for us."

How it Happened

• Radford scored in the top of the first, but the Rockets came back in the bottom of the inning when Denner crushed a homer to bring home freshman Leah Munson and put Toledo up 2-1.
• The Rockets held the lead until the fourth inning when a pop up landed between the circle and second base, allowing a Radford runner to come home.
• Toledo regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Denner made her way to third before senior Samantha Golden sent her home with a sacrifice fly to left field, putting the Rockets up 3-2.
• Radford then loaded the bases with no outs in the top of seventh. Denner came up with a huge double-play when she stretched out to snag a pop-up on the third base line, then made the throw to the shortstop covering third to double off the runner. Hunt then closed out the win by inducing a game-ending fly-out to left field.
