Get to know your University of Toledo swimming and diving team! Next up, Emma Sampson!

Emma Sampson | Senior | Mount Sterling, Ohio | Backstroke/IM

When did you start swimming?
I have always loved the water, so I've been in the pool or a lake for as long as I can remember. I started swim lessons at a YMCA and one day I wandered over to the swim team practice, I started swimming on the team the next day. I was five. 
 
What is your favorite thing about being a swimmer? 
I love the water, so I love having the opportunity to be in the water every day. But more than that, I love the people. I have had so many great teammates, competitors, and coaches over the years. 
 
Why did you decide to come to the University of Toledo? 
The opportunity to major in mechanical engineering and compete at the collegiate level was one that many schools couldn't offer. The college of engineering has a great reputation and opportunities for real world work experience. UT was the only school that gave me the opportunity to pursue engineering and swimming in my college experience. 
 
What is your favorite spot on campus? 
I have been a campus tour guide since my sophomore year, so I have grown to love so many parts of campus. I would say my favorite spot on campus is the bridge over the Ottawa River by the library. 
 
What is your major and why did you choose it? 
I'm majoring in mechanical engineering (one semester left woo hoo!). I chose it because I loved the idea of the challenge of an ever innovating and changing industry. I have had great experiences with my co-ops, so now I know that I love the challenge. 
 
What is the most interesting class you've taken at Toledo? 
Within my Major: Thermodynamics 2 with Dr. Cioc. 
Outside of my major: Ohio History with Dr. Way. 
 
What is your plan for after graduation? 
Work for Lathrop Construction, a Turner Construction company. I'm excited to stay in the Glass City. I want to run a marathon after graduation too, and eventually an Ironman! 
 
Dream vacation spot? 
Road trip out west with Lauren Wegener. Dreaming of a May 2021 road trip!!!! 
 
What are your hobbies? 
I love to read. I'm trying to read 50 books in 2020! My favorite book I've ever read is Tuesdays with Morrie. I love playing board and card games, Scattergories and euchre are my favorite games. 
 
Do you have a nickname? 
The only nickname I have ever gotten is Swemma. Kind of self explanatory.
 
Who are your role models? 
My grandma Joan. She is the world's best human. 
 
What is your favorite restaurant in Toledo? 
Stubborn Brother, The Leaf and Seed, Fowl and Fodder, QQ Kitchen, Inside the Five
 
Do you like to cook? What's your favorite meal to cook? 
I love to cook, but I wouldn't call myself a chef. I like making soup! Any kind! I like to try cooking something new when I have the chance, so I like to try new recipes .
 
What are your favorite TV shows?
Chopped, Guy's Grocery Games, Beat Bobby Flay. 
 
What is your favorite holiday?
GIVE THANKSGIVING THE RESPECT IT DESERVES
 
What is your favorite comfort food?
My mom's chicken noodle soup, she gave me the recipe but I can't quite get it as good as hers.
