TOLEDO, Ohio – Head coach
Joe Abraham announced Tuesday that Dayna Denner and Anna Dixon are transferring to the University of Toledo from Ashland University and Hillsdale College, respectively. Denner and Dixon are eligible to play for the Rockets in the upcoming 2020 season.
Denner earned GLIAC Freshman of the Year honors in 2017 after an impressive showing at the plate. The Brooklyn Heights, Ohio native stole 16 bases and hit four home runs her first year with the Eagles. Denner's efforts with the team earned her All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) first team, National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region, and Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-Region accolades. During her second year with the Eagles, Denner went 6-for-15 with two runs, two doubles, two triples, and four RBIs before suffering an injury that ended her sophomore season.
In the 2019 season, Denner returned to the field and became a stand-out for the Eagles, registering a .400 batting average and driving in a school-record 47 runs. Denner's efforts at the plate earned her NCAA Division II second-team All-America and first-team All-Midwest Region honors by both the D2CAA and NFCA, as well as first-team All-GLIAC accolades.
"Dayna will bring offensive production to our lineup," said Abraham. "The GLIAC is an excellent Division II conference. She was Freshman of the Year a couple of years ago and made second team All-America this year. With two years of eligibility remaining, we expect her to be able to step right in and produce for us."
Dixon is transferring to Toledo after spending one season with the Chargers from Hillsdale College, she will have three years of eligibility remaining. As a utility player, Dixon appeared in 32 games during her freshman season with the Chargers, recording a .301 batting average with 83 at-bats. She was a member of the 2019 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament Championship team and recorded three at-bats during the second round of the 2019 NCAA Division II Regionals.
A native of Novi, Mich., Dixon was a member of one of the strongest programs in Oakland County during her high school career. Dixon was twice named to the All-District team and earned All-State and All-Region honors in 2017. As a utility player, Dixon helped lead Farmington Hills Mercy to three district titles, two regional championships, and the 2016 Division I state title.
"Anna is someone I recruited when I was at Hillsdale, so I've watched her a lot," said Abraham. "She played on a top-level Finesse travel team and faced Division I level pitching over hundreds of at-bats. She has a nice lefty swing and is a gap hitter who uses all fields. She can also play any position on the field, except pitcher, so it will be great to be able to utilize her many talents."
