5/16/2019 10:42:00 AM

Toledo, Ohio - Adrian Ghioroaie (JOR-rye) has been promoted to associate head coach of the University of Toledo's women's track and field team, head coach Linh Nguyen announced on Thursday. Ghioroaie has been serving as an assistant coach for sprints, jumps, and multi-event athletes since the 2015-16 track and field season.

"I'm very excited to announce that we have elevated Adrian to the position of associate head coach," said Nguyen. "Adrian made an immediate impact on our program and has continued to be a great leader. He's been responsible for mentoring multiple MAC champions on the track and for the overall rise in our sprints/jumps/multis group. Since he has been here, Adrian has coached the first-ever Toledo MAC champions in both the 60 meters and the pentathlon. We've worked hard to become a well-rounded program and Adrian has been a big part of that process. This promotion is something that he has earned and should be proud to receive. Congratulations to Adrian and his family. We look forward to many years of success with him in our program."

"I am very excited and humbled to receive this promotion," said Ghioroaie. "Many thanks to (Athletic Director) Mike O`Brien, (Senior Associate Athletic Director) Kelly Andrews, and head coach Linh Nguyen. These past three years have been very good as the sprints, jumps and combined events crew have made tremendous strides. I believe we are moving in the right direction, and I am looking forward to building on this recent success as we challenge for conference titles and national rankings."

Since taking the helm as the lead instructor for Toledo's sprints, jumps, and multi-event athletes in 2016, Ghioroaie has coached the Rockets to numerous podium appearances at both indoor and outdoor MAC championship meets. Under Ghioroaie's direction, Shanice Williams became the first Rocket in Toledo history to claim the 60m title at the 2018 MAC Indoor Championships and successfully defended that title in 2019. Atalia Lima also became the first MAC pentathlon champion in Toledo's history at the 2019 MAC Indoor Championships. Lima's and Williams' performances during the 2019 indoor championships earned them First-Team All-MAC honors.

Ghioroaie also coached high jumper Madeline Pacella as well as hurdler Danda da Silva to NCAA East Regional appearances during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 outdoor seasons. Hurdler Yana Khabina earned a NCAA regional appearance during the 2017-18 outdoor season.

During the 2017 indoor season Hill, Khabina, Kristiana Collins, and da Silva posted the school record for the 4x400m relay (3:45.30).
