Toledo, Ohio -Â Â The University of Toledo Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) handed out awards for the 2018-19 season at its fourth annual Rocket Senior Banquet at Libby Hall on April 22. Emma Sampson (women's swimming & diving) and Bailey Flint (football) served as emcees for the event. UT's head coaches introduced their seniors and highlighted their accomplishments.
Football player Cody Thompson was honored as the Men's Most Valuable Player, while women's soccer player Hannah Scafaria was named the Women's MVP. Bailey Cahill of the women's swimming & diving team was named the Sportswoman of the Year while men's cross country runner Brian Stubelt was named Sportsman of the Year. The Sportsman/Sportswoman awards are given to the seniors who exhibited the highest degree of excellence in athletics, academics and community service.
Senior Scholar Athlete awards went to Lauren Bakaitis (women's volleyball) and Matthew Gibbons (men's cross country).
The Women's Team of the Year award was presented to the Women's Cross Country team, which finished in second place at the 2018 MAC Championship Meet. Men's Basketball, which went 25-8 and won a MAC West Division title, won the Men's Team of the Year award.
"We are very proud to honor this wonderful group of seniors," said UT vice president and athletic director Mike O'Brien. "It's a privilege to have known and been associated with such outstanding student-athletes. We know that they will go on to achieve success in their chosen fields and continue to make all of Rocket Nation proud of them."
