MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Toledo (19-9, 11-6 MAC) will wrap-up its regular season on Saturday, March 9 at Mid-American Conference West Division champion Central Michigan (23-6, 14-3 MAC). The opening tip is slated for 1:00 p.m. in McGuirk Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.
The Rockets are currently in fifth place in the overall MAC standings. UT can earn the No. 5 seed in next week's MAC Tournament with either a win tomorrow or a Kent State loss vs. Buffalo. Toledo would be the No. 6 seed with a loss and a KSU victory.
Regardless of its spot in the final standings, Toledo will host a first-round contest in next week's MAC Tournament on Monday, March 11. If the post-season tourney started before today, UT would entertain No. 12 seed arch-rival Bowling Green on Monday at 7:00 p.m.Â
UT will meet CMU in the final league contest for a second-straight year and fourth time overall. Last year, the Rockets suffered a tough 72-67 home setback against the Chippewas before 4,837 fans in Savage Arena in the regular-season finale. Toledo has won the other two regular-season finale meetings vs. Central Michigan by scores of 85-75 in 2011 and 62-50 in 2003.Â
UT enters tomorrow's regular-season finale on the heels of a thrilling 70-67 double-overtime road victory at Eastern Michigan on Wednesday in the Convocation Center to extend its winning streak to a season-tying best four-consecutive games.
Clinging to a 68-67 lead with only 10 seconds remaining in the second extra period, sophomore
Tanaya Beacham pulled down a huge offensive rebound to help UT keep possession. Beacham passed the ball out to classmate
Nakiah Black, who was immediately fouled. Black calmly made both free throws in the waning seconds to close out the heart-pounding, three-point road triumph.
Senior
Kaayla McIntyre paced Toledo with a season-high 25 points and 15 boards to post her ninth double-double this year and 18th as a collegiate.
Black contributed 13 points and a season-high four thefts, while junior
Mariella Santucci had 11 points and a game-high four helpers. Both Black and Santucci logged a career-high 49 minutes, tied for the second-highest total in school history, to help UT sweep the regular-season series against the Eagles.
The Rockets, who are 8-6 away from home, continue to be led offensively by trio of McIntyre (16.6 ppg), Black (10.7 ppg), senior
Mikaela Boyd (10.0 ppg) and Santucci (9.4 ppg).
Toledo will take on a streaking CMU squad which has won its last seven games, including an 88-57 home triumph vs. Western Michigan on Wednesday. MAC Player of the Year candidates Reyna Frost and Presley Hudson led the Chippewas with 20 points each, followed closely by Micaela Kelly with 18.
CMU, which holds a 9-4 ledger at home, features all starters tallying at least 14.0 ppg and is led by Frost's 21.3 and Hudson's 20.3 ppg, respectively. In addition, Frost is pulling down a MAC-best 13.6 boards per contest.
Tomorrow's MAC West Division showdown will pit UT's stingy defense against CMU's high-powered offense.Â
Toledo is currently leading the MAC in scoring defense (59.9 ppg), overall field-goal percentage defense (.379, 376-of-992), three-point field-goal percentage defense (.278, 82-of-295) and three-point field-goals allowed (4.8) in league games, while Central Michigan is first in scoring offense (81.9 ppg), overall field-goal percentage (.486, 524-of-1,078) and three-point field-goal percentage (.369, 147-of-398), as well as ranking second in three-point field-goals made (8.6).
UT and CMU will meet for the second time this year and 83rd time overall. The Rockets registered a hard-fought 62-59 home triumph against the defending MAC Champion Chippewas on Jan. 23 before 3,603 fans in Savage Arena.
The Rockets lead the all-time series, 49-33, but have lost three of the last four meetings against their division rival.
A year ago, CMU claimed an 85-47 home victory vs. UT in McGuirk Arena (Feb. 10).
Toledo also holds a slim 19-18 advantage in games played in Mount Pleasant.
