Rockets Jump Up Five Spots in Round 2 of The Goodwin

3/29/2019 11:38:00 PM

STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Muhammed Afif Mohd Fathi fired a one-under 69 on Friday for his best round as a collegian to help the Toledo men's golf team improve five spots in the second round of The Goodwin hosted by Stanford University.

The Rockets posted a seven-over par 287 today, a 14-stroke improvement from their opening-round score.

Mohd Fathi (74-69=143) moved up 25 places in the individual standings after registering four birdies and three bogeys and never moving more than one under or over par. Sophomore Grant Godfrey carded UT's second-best round of the day with a one-over par 71. He double-bogeyed his opening hole, birdied No. 2 and No. 4 and then remained within one stroke of even par for the remainder of the day. Sophomore Dylan Van Fossen registered his second straight three-over par 73 after playing his first five holes at one-under par.

"The guys have been making positive strides that sometimes show up in the results and sometimes don't," Head Coach Jeff Roope said. "It's always nice to see a good score or two, but as long as they are committed to growth I know we will ultimately get to where we want to be. Afif, Dylan and Grant have been committed to those ideals."

Rounding out the Rocket lineup were senior Duncan McNeill at 11-over par 151 (77-74) and junior Rasmus Broholt Lind at 13-over par 153 (77-76).

Host Stanford leads the 27-team field at two-under par 558, seven shots in front of No. 6 USC. The tournament features 13 teams ranked in the Top 50 of this week's Golfstat rankings and is the most challenging tourney UT is competing in this season.

The tournament's final round will be played tomorrow.
