UT Ventures to MAC East Division Champ Buffalo on Wednesday

2/5/2019 7:24:00 AM

AMHERST, N.Y. - Toledo (13-6, 5-3 MAC) will play its third-consecutive Mid-American Conference East Division opponent on Wednesday, Feb. 6 when it ventures to 2018 "Sweet 16" participant Buffalo (14-5, 6-2 MAC). Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.

The Rockets have tallied a 2-3 (.400) record against cross-division foes thus far in 2018-19 but hold an impressive 60-28 (.682) mark over the last 10-plus seasons under head coach Tricia Cullop.

UT is coming off a convincing 76-56 home triumph vs. Bowling Green on Saturday before 4,757 fans in Savage Arena. Sophomore Nakiah Black scored a season-high 24 points to lead Toledo to its seventh-consecutive victory against its arch-rival.

Black, who nailed a season-best 6-of-8 shots from three-point range, tallied 11 points in the pivotal second quarter, as Toledo outscored the Falcons 23-5 to take a commanding 21-point lead into halftime. The Rockets then extinguished any hope for a BGSU comeback by opening the third stanza on a 15-5 run, giving them a 54-23 lead with 5:50 to play in the period. Toledo cruised the rest of the way, leading by as many as 35 points before eventually settling on an impressive 20-point triumph.

The Midnight Blue & Gold also benefited from 13 points and a game-high 13 boards by senior Kaayla McIntyre and a season-best 10 points from sophomore Tatyana Davis.

As a team, Toledo shot a sizzling 52.7 percent (29-for-55) from the floor, including a season-high 54.2 (13-for-24) from three-point range, and a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.

The Rockets also outrebounded the Falcons, 39-26, led by McIntyre's fourth game with at least 10 caroms this year and finished with a MAC season-high 25 assists. Three different players dished out at least five helpers in Saturday's cross-division match-up, including a game-high six from senior Mikaela Boyd.

Toledo, which is 6-4 away from home, continues to be led offensively by the quartet of McIntyre, Black, junior Mariella Santucci and Boyd, who are averaging 15.3, 10.1, 10.0 and 9.9 ppg, respectively.

Buffalo, which is 5-2 at home, is coming off a 76-65 road setback at MAC West Division frontrunner Central Michigan on Saturday. MAC Player of the Year candidate Cierra Dillard paced the reigning MAC East Division champion Bulls with 25 points, followed by Summer Hemphill and Hanna Hall with 12 points each. UB was limited to 33.3 percent (20-of-60) from the floor and outscored 38-20 in the paint against the Chippewas to snap its six-game winning streak.

Buffalo possesses an efficient offense with three players averaging at least 10.0 points per game led by Dillard's MAC-high 25.1 ppg.

Tomorrow's MAC cross-division match-up will pit UT's stingy defense against UB's high-octane offense. Toledo is currently second in the league in scoring defense (59.8 ppg), third in overall field-goal percentage defense (.386, 417-of-1,080) and fourth in three-point field-goal percentage defense (.307, 109-of-355), while Buffalo is fourth in scoring offense (75.4 ppg) and eighth in both overall field-goal percentage (.402, 494-of-1,228) and three-point field-goal percentage (.314, 142-of-452).

UT and UB will meet for the only time this year and 29th time overall. Toledo leads the all-time series, 22-6, and has won four of the last six meetings against the Bulls. UT also holds an 8-5 edge in games played in Alumni Arena.

A year ago, the Buffalo swept the regular-season series, claiming an 87-69 home victory (Jan. 20) and an 84-73 road triumph (Feb. 3) to stop UT's four-game winning streak in the series.

Following tomorrow's MAC cross-division match-up, the Rockets will host MAC West Division rival Eastern Michigan (10-9, 3-5 MAC) on Saturday, Feb. 9. The opening tip against the Eagles is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.

In conjunction with Saturday's contest, UT will host the fourth-annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day honors the accomplishments and hard work of female student-athletes in the classroom, in sports and in the community. The day will showcase UT's current female student-athletes, staff and coaches and thank them for all of their hard work.

The sports of soccer, volleyball and golf will be represented at the event, along with cheer and dance, in the Fetterman Practice Gym between 12:30-2:00 p.m.

UT and EMU will meet for the first of two times this year and 83rd time overall.

Toledo leads the all-time series, 49-33, and has won three of the last four meetings against its division rival. UT also holds a 27-12 edge in games played in at home.

A season ago, the teams split their two meetings with the home team emerging victorious each time. The Rockets suffered a 70-57 road setback against the Eagles in the Convocation Center (Jan. 6), before securing an 80-69 home triumph in Savage Arena (Feb. 21).
