Atalia Lima Makes History as Toledo’s First Pentathlon Champion

2/22/2019 9:43:00 PM

Kent, Ohio – Sophomore Atalia Lima became the first Rocket to win the pentathlon in the first day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Kent, Ohio on Friday. Lima, who had a score of 3542 points, took second in the high jump (1.69m) and long jump (5.47), third in the shot put (11.57) eighth in the 800-meters (2:33.25) and 18th in the 60-meters (9.90).

Toledo finished Day One at the MAC Championships with a team score of 25 in fourth place behind Central Michigan, (52.2 points) Akron (39 points), and Eastern Michigan (37 points).

"It was awesome," said head coach Linh Nguyen of Lima's performance. "She didn't have the best hurdles to start off, but after that she built a lot of momentum in the high jump and just carried it through the rest of the events. She won by nine points so she fought hard until the end. At the end of the 800 she was hurting, but she battled."

Junior Athena Welsh lapped the competition in the 5000 meters, clinching first with a time of 16:33.55. Senior Jennifer Lichter took eighth in the 5000 with a time of 17:11.25. Senior Deja Martin also stepped to the podium, taking eighth in the long jump with a leap of 5.55m.

Senior Shanice Williams advanced to the finals in the 60-meters, clocking a personal-best 7.39 to take first. In the 800-meter event, seniors Janelle Noe and Petronela Simiuc took first (2:11.32) and fifth (2:12.07), respectively, earning spots in the Saturday's finals.

"They ran great today. All those women ran terrific," said Nguyen on Saturday's qualifiers. "Tomorrow the goal is, if you're in the final, you're scoring. The goal is to go in there and compete as hard as you can and finish as high as possible. Shanice in the 60-meters and Janelle and Petronela in the 800-meters have very good chances to finish up high.

"I think we put a lot of points on the board and had a few nice surprises. A couple of things didn't go quite the way we wanted, but overall I feel really good about where we are," said Nguyen.

Field events will resume at noon on Saturday, with running events beginning at 1:20 p.m.
