Toledo, Ohio - Former University of Toledo women's soccer captain Hannah Scafaria (Kalamazoo, Mich.) has signed on to play for Rävåsens IK Karlskoga in Karlskoga, Sweden, the club announced today. Scafaria is the second Rocket to play professionally since head coach TJ Buchholz' hiring in 2015, following 2017 graduate Isa Echeverri (Medellin, Columbia) who has played for Greek club Elpides Karditsas F.C. and the Colombian national team.
Â
Rävåsens plays in the Swedish Division 1 league and went 14-6-2 last season, finishing second behind IK Rössö Uddevalla.
Â
"I am very excited to play at the next level," Scafaria said. "There is so much opportunity to grow and I can't wait to learn and get better. I am thankful for this opportunity."
Â
"It's a tremendous accomplishment for her," Buchholz said. "Hannah had a record-breaking career here at the University of Toledo and we couldn't be happier for her considering all that she's been through. To see her reach amazing heights in the Mid-American Conference and NCAA Division I, and then to see her now be able to prolong her career at the professional level is truly an amazing achievement and we're so excited for her."
Â
Scafaria dominated Toledo's offense during the 2018 season, amassing 14 goals and one assist in 19 matches. Her efforts moved her to third-place all-time at UT for most goals scored in a single season behind Molly Cornwell (2007) and Corrie Hasenjager (2000) who both netted 15. The forward ended the year with the most goals in the conference, two up over Bowling Green's Erica Hubert. At one point in the season, Scafaria was also ranked second in the nation for total goals and fifth in the nation for goals-per-game. Scafaria was named to the All-MAC first team and the United Soccer Coaches' All-Midwest Region second team following the year. Her first- and second-team recognitions make her the second Rocket under Buchholz to earn conference and regional honors in her career, joining Echeverri who earned all-conference honors in all four of her years and was a regional third team selection in 2016 and '17.
