UT Squares Off vs. Miami on Wednesday in Cross-Division Finale

2/19/2019 11:47:00 AM

TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo (15-8, 7-5 MAC) will play its final game against a Mid-American Conference East Division opponent on Wednesday, Feb. 20 vs. division leader Miami (19-4, 10-2 MAC). Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.

UT is 61-29 (.678) against MAC East Division opponents over the last 10-plus seasons under head coach Tricia Cullop, including an 11-2 ledger (.846) vs. Miami. Thus far in 2018-19, Toledo has tallied a 3-4 (.429) record against cross-division foes.

The Rockets enter tomorrow's contest following a tough 54-52 road setback against Northern Illinois on Saturday.

Mikayla Voigt's traditional three-point play with 5.8 seconds remaining in regulation lifted the host Huskies to the two-point victory before 1,305 fans in the Convocation Center. The Rockets had two opportunities to force overtime or win the MAC West Division showdown in regulation, but they were unable to get a shot off.

Senior Kaayla McIntyre paced UT with a game-high 20 points and a contest-best 15 boards vs. NIU to post her third-straight double-double and seventh on the year. Sophomore Nakiah Black added 12 points on a contest-high four three-point field goals.

Senior Sarah St-Fort also chipped in a season-tying best eight points, while junior Mariella Santucci had six points and a game-high eight assists.

As a team, the Rockets shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field, including 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from three-point range, and 60.0 percent (3-of-5) from the charity stripe. Toledo also finished with a sizable 44-34 edge on the boards, marking the eighth time it has posted a double-digit rebounding advantage this year.

Overall this year, UT features a balanced attack with McIntyre, Black, Boyd and Santucci averaging 15.8, 10.9, 9.7 and 9.6 ppg, respectively. This quartet accounts for 68.4 percent (1,045-of-1,527) of Toledo's scoring.

UT, which is 9-2 in home games, will square off against a red-hot Miami squad that is in the midst of a season-best nine-game winning streak. Most recently, the RedHawks secured a 67-61 road triumph at Akron on Saturday. Lauren Dickerson led Miami with 15 points vs. the Zips, followed by Savannah Kluesner and Leah Purvis with 13 and 10, respectively. Kluesner added a team-high 10 boards to post her sixth double-double of the season.

Miami, which is 10-3 away from home, possesses an offense with four players averaging at least 10.5 points per game led by Dickerson and Kluesner's 15.9 and 14.6 ppg, respectively.

Tomorrow's MAC cross-division finale will feature two of the league's premiere defenses. Toledo is currently leading the league in scoring defense (59.0 ppg) and overall field-goal percentage defense (.374, 499-of-1,333), as well as ranking second in three-point field-goal percentage defense (.283, 121-of-427) and three-point field-goals allowed (121, 5.3), while Miami is second (59.5 ppg), fourth (.396, 523-of-1,322) and first (.239, 96-of-402) (96, 4.1) in the same categories, respectively.

In addition, the Rockets are second in the conference in rebounding margin (+4.3, 38.6-34.2), while the RedHawks are a close third (+3.2, 38.8-35.6).

UT and Miami will meet for the second time this year and 66th time overall. The Rockets suffered a 65-64 road setback against the RedHawks on Jan. 9 in Millett Hall.

Toledo had the ball under its own basket and trailed 65-62 with 4.6 seconds left. Boyd raced the ball up the floor and passed it to junior Sara Rokkanen on the wing. The Finland native had a good look at a game-tying triple, but her shot was long. Sophomore Tatyana Davis grabbed the offensive rebound out of the air and scored a layup as a horn sounded to make the final score 65-64.

The Rockets lead the all-time series, 38-27, but have dropped the last two matchups against their intrastate foe after winning the previous 11 meetings since 2008-09. UT also holds a 22-8 edge in games played in Savage Arena and has won the last six meetings at home.

Two years ago, the Rockets utilized a strong fourth quarter to secure a 64-50 triumph over Miami before 3,381 fans in Savage Arena (Jan. 7).

Following tomorrow's contest, the Rockets will travel to MAC West Division rival Ball State (7-17, 2-10 MAC) on Saturday, Feb. 23. The opening tip against the Cardinals is slated for 4:30 p.m. in Worthen Arena and will be streamed on ESPN3.

UT and BSU will square off for the second time this year and 81st time overall. The Rockets claimed a 65-58 home victory against the Cardinals in their MAC opener on Jan. 5 in Savage Arena.

Toledo leads the all-time series vs. Ball State, 55-25, and has won three of the last four match-ups against its division foe. UT also maintains a 23-15 advantage in games played in Worthen Arena but has dropped four of the last five in Muncie.

A season ago, UT suffered a 78-73 road setback at BSU (Feb. 24).
