DEKALB, Ill. - The University of Toledo women's cross country team finished fourth overall with 102 points at the Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday. Senior Petronela Simiuc led the Rockets, posting a time of 21:59.8 to finish in fifth place. Simiuc also earned First Team All-MAC honors for her performance.
"We ran a very solid race overall as a team today," said head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. "We probably got caught a little too far back again and that's been an issue for us this season, but I was proud of the fight the women put up to try to put us back in it. The highlight for us today was Petronela's breakout race. She was 22nd a year ago and was fifth out there today. She's been training at such a high level all fall and really made a mental shift in regards to cross country this season and it shows."
Junior Michelle Hostettler took 21st with a time of 22:37.5 and senior Stephanie Sherman took 23rd with a time of 22:38.5. Freshman Emily Vining was the first freshman to cross the finish line, stopping the clock at 22:49.9 to take 26th. Vining was named Freshman of the Year for her performance.
"I was also very proud of the way our other senior, Stephanie Sherman raced today. She put herself up in the top 20 and fought for that all the way. I was also very excited to grab the Freshman of the Year away on the women's side to go along with the men's. Emily ran a really gritty, tough race and I'm looking forward to her progress within our program. Now we head back home to prepare for the upcoming NCAA Regional and putting together our best team effort," said Grove-McDonough.
