TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo closed out exhibition play in fine fashion with an impressive 86-59 victory against Findlay on Saturday in Savage Arena.
Juniors
Tanaya Beacham and
Tatyana Davis led a balanced Rockets' attack with 13 points each, followed closely by senior
Mariella Santucci and junior
Nakiah Black with 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Midnight Blue & Gold also received nine points from freshman
Quinesha Lockett. In total, eight different players totaled at least six points in the convincing 27-point triumph.Â
As a team, the Rockets shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the floor, including 30.0 percent (9-of-30) from three-point land, and 63.0 percent (17-of-27) from the free throw line.
Toledo was big on the glass and finished with a plus-nine, 42-33, rebounding advantage, as six players pulled down at least four caroms. Among those 42 boards were 18 offensive which they translated into 25 points.Â
The Rockets were also tough defensively, forcing Findlay into committing 30 turnovers. They took full advantage of those miscues and turned them into 27 points.Â
Bridget Landin paced the NCAA Division II member Oilers with 10 points off the bench, while Amber Schweiger and Lilly Simon had nine and eight points, respectively.
FIRST QUARTER
• The teams traded baskets at the outset, before the Rockets strung together a 10-0 run to create a 21-11 lead at the 3:26 mark. Senior
Sara Rokkanen and Davis sparked the quick burst with triples to force the Oilers to burn an early timeout.
• Findlay momentarily stalled Toledo's momentum with a traditional three-point play, but the Rockets responded with three-consecutive layups by Beacham and Santucci to give the home squad a 29-19 advantage at the end of the period.
• The Rockets shot a scorching 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the field, including 4-of-8 from three-point land.
• Santucci triggered the hot start with six points in the quarter, followed by Beacham with five.
SECOND QUARTER
• The Rockets continued to be efficient offensively, taking advantage of treys from Rokkanen and freshman
Soleil Barnes, as well as a traditional three-point play by Santucci, to stretch their lead to 53-30 at the intermission.
• Toledo doubled up Findlay in the second period, 24-12, to help the Midnight Blue & Gold establish a sizable 23-point cushion at the break. Eleven different Rockets scored in the opening 20 minutes, sparked by a game-high nine from Santucci.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Rockets essentially put the game out of the reach within the first minute of the third quarter, benefiting from consecutive triples by Black and Santucci.Â
• Moments later, Lockett and Davis contributed four points apiece to make Toledo's lead 72-49 heading into the final 10 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• The Rockets were not threatened at any point in the final period, as they emptied their bench and coasted to the impressive 27-point home triumph. Â
