Rockets Lift Off for NCAA Great Lakes Regional Friday

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis. on Friday. The women's 6K is set for 11:30 a.m. (CT) with the men's 10K to follow at 12:30 p.m.Â

Both squads last competed at the Mid-American Conference Championship, where the women's team placed fourth with 102 points and the men's team took seventh with 168 points.Â

Senior Petronela Simiuc placed fifth with a time of 21:59.8, earning first team All-MAC honors. Following Simiuc was junior Michelle Hostettler, who clocked a time of 22:37.5 to take 21st. Senior Stephanie Sherman took 23rd with a time of 22:38.5 and freshman Emily Vining stopped the clock at 22:49.9 to place 26th. Vining was also named MAC Freshman of the Year.Â

On the men's side freshman Jacob Harris set pace for the Rockets, stopping the clock at 25:42.3 to land sixth. Harris' finish earned him first team All-MAC honors as well as MAC Freshman of the Year honors. Sophomore Raymond Korir took 13th, posting a time of 25:57.1, earning second team All-MAC honors. Â

Last Time at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional
Last season the Rocket women earned a ninth-place team finish with 297 points. Athena Welsh led the Rockets, landing 17th with finishing the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind. in 20:55.2, a time that would earn her a spot at the NCAA Championships.Â

The men's squad took 27th with 794 points with Dismas Koech leading the way, posting a time of 33:23.0. Jake Papish followed close behind, posting a time of 34:15.2.Â
