Second-Half Flurry Lifts Rockets to 6-1 Win over EMU
10/10/2019 10:40:00 PM | Women's Soccer
For the Rockets, it was sophomore Anita Mancini who began the scoring onslaught with a goal in the 43rd minute to take both teams into the break. The Rockets never took their foot off the gas, as sophomore Ashton Cassel added a second just 22 seconds into the second half. Junior transfer Josie Fowler recorded her first Rocket goal less than 10 minutes later when Lewis placed a perfect corner kick to the far post and Fowler tapped it past the Eagles' keeper.
The Eagles tried to begin a scoring frenzy of their own, scoring in the 61st minute to cut the Rockets' lead to 3-1. Not even a minute a later the Rockets struck again, this time from the left side on a blast from freshman Stephanie Currie.
The Rockets' second-half onrush would see a fifth goal scored in the 77th minute as freshman Brooke Stonehouse took a shot from far outside the 18-yard-box off a pass from Cassel. Stonehouse would add her second assist of the night 10 minutes later, as a give-and-go set sophomore Tatiana Woodworth up for her second goal of the season.
QUOTE OF THE MATCH
"It was a tough start to MAC play, and it's about not hanging your head on that," said head coach TJ Buchholz. "We didn't look like a defeated team tonight; our energy is still top-notch. We take it one game at a time and the end goal is get to the tournament and be successful there. I like our fight and our toughness. Starting 0-4 would startle a lot of people, and it just didn't rattle this team. That's evident by how strong they came out tonight. We really need to keep it going, but it's nice to get a balanced score. We have to keep it going. Central Michigan is a really tough team, and we have to keep the same energy and effort for Sunday on the road."
