Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women' swimming & diving team jumps back into the pool this weekend when the Rockets welcome the Ohio Bobcats into town. UT and Ohio push off at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the UT Student Rec Center in the penultimate home meet of the season. The first 100 fans in attendance of Friday's meet will walk away with Toledo-branded Yowies, courtesy of Kroger.
Â
Fans planning to attend the meet should be aware that on-campus parking will be restricted due to the men's basketball game at 7 p.m. Lots 3, 4, 5 and 6 will close at 11 a.m. Campus guests attending the swim meet will need to park in lot 9.
Toledo's swimmers last competed at Akron's Zippy Invitational in the last weekend of November. UT finished the meet in sixth place, earning 710.5 points, 86 season-best times, 14 career-best times and nine top-10 finishes over the three-day meet. Freshman Ashley Jeffreys highlighted the meet by swimming the 100 backstroke in 55.85, which ranks as the seventh-best time in program history.
"We've been working very hard since the Zippy Invite," head coach Jonas Persson said. "We started off by going back to the basics and working on really simple but important things. Then we added in more quality training combined with an intense training schedule to put some physical and mental stress on the team. I think we've taken some pretty big and important steps over winter break and I'm excited to see how they react against Ohio on Friday, as well as Miami next week and BGSU in three weeks."Â
UT's divers have already kicked off the new year; Freshmen Joelle Gallais and Sydney Jackson are coming off impressive showings at last weekend's three day University at Buffalo Diving Invitational. Jackson, who's been battling back from an injury, competed in her first 3-meter event since coming to Toledo. She finished 13th in the prelims after earning a score of 212.50.
Â
Gallais had a dominant weekend in Buffalo, taking third overall in the 3-meter on day two (255.75) and following up on day three with a sweep in the platform event. In what was only her second time jumping off the 10-meter ledge, Gallais won both the prelims and finals portions after scoring 233.40 and 249.95 points, respectively. Her finals score was 24.75 points ahead of second place Jae Sarkis from UB and set a new personal record.
Â
"I expect our swimmers and divers to keep applying what they've learned in practice," Persson said. "I look at the meet on Friday and the other two meets as a perfect way to prepare for our championship in seven weeks. It will be a lot of fun seeing them race against a good MAC team."
