Rockets Shot Down by Weber State, 3-1

South Bend, Ind.— Toledo's weekend at the Golden Dome Invitational ended with a 3-1 loss to Weber State on Saturday evening.

The Wildcats won the first two sets by the same score, 25-18, before UT won a back-and-forth third set, 28-26. Despite hanging around for much of set four, the Rockets would drop that frame 25-22.

Chloee Kleespies tallied a match-high 16 kills to give her 38 for the weekend. Caleigh Barhorst and Zoe Birnbrich were next with nine kills apiece, and Birnbrich added three blocks as well. Maddie Fogg was credited for 45 sets and 12 digs, her second double-double of the tournament. Maurissa Leonard added 27 digs to give her 80 for the weekend, putting her just 16 away from setting the new all-time dig record at Toledo.

Next up for the Rockets is a tournament at Bradley next weekend during which UT will play the Braves, George Washington, and Western Illinois.

Set 1
Toledo and Weber State were neck-and-neck for much of the first set. The Wildcats led 4-1 at one point, but the two squads would spend much of the first game trading points. There were 10 tie scores in the first frame, more than any set all weekend for the Rockets. 14-14 would be the last tie score; a Weber State service ace gave them a 15-14 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish. The Wildcats scored the final four points of the set to clinch a 25-18 victory.

Set 2
The second set ended with the same score as the first, but arrived there in just about the opposite way. Toledo scored the first three points of the set, but Weber State rattled off 13 of the next 16 to take a commanding 14-6 lead. Once the Wildcats grabbed hold of the lead they never relented, and wound up taking a 2-0 lead in the match over the Rockets.

Set 3
Toledo once again started off with a 3-0 lead, but this time doubled that advantage to six to take a 13-7 lead thanks to huge offensive contributions from Barhorst and Kleespies. Eleven of the next 13 points, however, went the way of the Wildcats, and all of a sudden Toledo found itself in an 18-15 hole. UT clawed its way back and after consecutive terminations from Haley Sendelbach, Kleespies, and Barhorst the score was knotted at 21-21. The Rockets twice found themselves on the wrong side of a set point, but battled back and Sendelbach blasted one over the net to clinch a 28-26 set three win to keep the Midnight Blue and Gold alive.

Set 4
UT spent much of the second set nipping at the heels of the Wildcats. Weber State did not trail until the 29th point of the set was scored, but the Rockets never trailed by more than two during that time. Toledo finally took a lead on a WSU service error to go ahead, 15-14. That would be the last time all match that UT found itself out in front of Weber State. The Wildcats went on to win 25-22 and take the match, 3-1.
