Boyd, McIntyre, St-Fort & Black Selected Team Captains

11/3/2018 7:29:00 AM

TOLEDO, Ohio - Seniors Mikaela Boyd, Kaayla McIntyre and Sarah St-Fort, along with sophomore Nakiah Black have been named captains for the Rockets' 2018-19 season, 11th-year Head Coach Tricia Cullop announced this week. The quartet was selected based on votes by their teammates.

Boyd was selected as a captain for the second time, while McIntyre, St-Fort and Black are first-time recipients.

"I thought our players made great choices this year in terms of captains," Cullop said. "Kaayla, Mikaela and Sarah are all veterans who haven't only logged a lot of minutes for us, but truly have an understanding of our culture and expectations. Nakiah quickly won over her teammates after joining us in late August, as she was an integral part of a junior college national championship team. All four of the players lead by example, truly care about their teammates, and will hold them accountable. We are in great hands with their leadership."

Boyd, a 5-foot-7 guard, averaged 12.1 points, a squad-high 8.0 rebounds, a team-best 4.2 assists and a squad-high 2.2 steals in a team-best 33.2 minutes per contest a season ago. The 2017-18 third-team All-MAC selection ranked sixth in the MAC in overall rebounding, seventh in thefts, assist/turnover ratio (1.7, 139-81) and defensive boards (5.8 rpg), ninth in helpers and minutes played, 13th in offensive caroms (2.2 rpg), 15th in overall field-goal percentage (.472, 152-of-322) and 23rd in scoring.

"It's a great feeling to once again be selected a captain," said Boyd. "I take great pride in being a leader on this team."

McIntyre, a 6-foot-2 center, contributed a team-best 16.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists, a team-high 1.4 blocks and 0.8 steals in 31.7 minutes per contest in 2017-18. She led the MAC in overall field-goal percentage (.632, 215-of-340, SEVENTH in NCAA), as well as ranking fifth in rejections, sixth in defensive caroms (6.0 rpg), eighth in overall rebounding and 11th in scoring.

"It is truly an honor to be named a captain by my teammates," said McIntyre. "It shows that they trust me to be a leader. This is a great opportunity for me that I won't take for granted."

The 2017-18 third-team All-MAC honoree concluded the year fourth in UT history in overall field-goal percentage, fifth in blocked shots (46) and sixth in overall field-goals made (215) in the single-season record book.

St-Fort, a 5-foot-10 forward, contributed 2.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 0.7 steals in 19.0 minutes in 32 contests in 2017-18. The two-time Academic All-MAC honoree finished third on the team in offensive boards (31), fourth in overall rebounding, overall field-goal percentage (.400, 36-of-90), steals, games started (24) and defensive caroms (67), tied for fourth in blocked shots (4) and fifth in minutes played (609).

"I'm so honored to be named a captain," said St-Fort. "I feel that is a huge privilege. I want to lead this team to a great season and be a good mentor for our younger players."

Black, a 5-foot-10 guard, averaged 14.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and a team-high 3.7 steals in 30 games at Tallahassee Community College in 2017-18. She helped the Eagles post a 29-6 overall record and claim the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Championship. Black shot 43.4 percent (144-of-332) from the field, including 31.2 percent (48-of-154) from three-point land, and 78.6 percent (88-of-112) from the charity stripe in a squad-best 27.1 minutes per contest. The Concord, N.C. native scored in double figures on 21 occasions during the year, including a season-high 31 points against Western Nebraska Community College on March 20.

"I appreciate the opportunity to be a leader of this year's team," said Black. "I take great pride in knowing that I was chosen in a vote of my teammates despite the fact that I have not yet played a game for Toledo. I feel that I will bring a different kind of spice to our squad."

Toledo opens its exhibition season today against NCAA Division II member Findlay at Noon in Savage Arena. UT's regular season commences seven days later on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Maine at 1:00 p.m.
