Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's swimming and diving team opened its season with a successful tri-meet, sweeping Indianapolis, 152-85, and Findlay, 159-72, on Friday. The Rockets earned six first-place finishes on the evening.Â
"I thought we did a nice job," said head coach Jonas Persson. "It was a good opener for us. Indianapolis is one of the best D-II teams out there and Findlay's really good, improving a lot. It was nice just to go out and see what we could do against them and win."Â
Persson was pleasantly surprised with freshman Sydnee Dressel and sophomore Lisa Eriksson's performances in the pool. Dressel clinched first in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:35.95 and took fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.09).
"We know she (Dressel)'s fast," said Persson, "but she came into the 400 IM with a really nice attitude and went after it and got a win and then went into the 500 free in the first heat, the slower heat, and did really well."Â
Eriksson clinched first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.91.Â
The Rockets also saw success in the pool from Duda Sales, who cliched first in the 100-yard butterfly (57.51), Bec Welke, who took first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.77)Â and Ashley Jeffreys, who placed first in the 100-yard backstroke (58.10). Jeffreys was followed closely by Maureen O'Sullivan, who secured second (58.77) in the 100-yard backstroke.Â
Toledo claimed victories in both relay events, with Kristen Straszacker, Welke, Sales, and Alida Ramden taking first in the 200-yard medley (1:45.75) and Jeffreys, Eriksson, Sophie Taylor, and Ramden taking first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.83).Â
