Sports Medicine Announces Staff Changes For 2017-18 Season

TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Toledo Sports Medicine Department announced the changes of four employee titles and the hiring of two new members to the sports medicine team.
Brian Jones, head of sports medicine, will have his title changed from assistant athletic director for sports medicine to associate athletic director and athletics health care administrator. Jones, who supervises the entire athletic health care the Rocket student-athletes, has been employed at UT for over 20 years. While serving as the overall director, Jones works primarily with the Rockets' men's basketball team.
Gretchen Buskirk, who currently serves as the associate head athletic trainer will see her title changed to assistant director of sports medicine and associate head athletic trainer. Buskirk, who has been with the UT Sports Medicine program for eight years works directly with the women's soccer program and oversees the graduate assistant athletic trainers who work with baseball, softball and swimming & diving.
Associate Athletic Trainer Brad Pierson will have his title elevated to senior associate athletic trainer. Pierson, who joined UT Sports Medicine in 2012, primarily works with the reigning Mid-American Conference Tournament champion women's basketball team and supervises the graduate assistants working with track & field, men's and women's cross country and volleyball.
"Gretchen has done a fantastic job assisting in policy development and Brad continues to expand the services that we are able to offer out student-athletes," said Jones.
Adam Barta has been promoted from assistant athletic trainer to associate athletic trainer-head football athletic trainer. Barta, who joined the UT Sports Medicine program in 2016, will oversee the health care of the Toledo football team, while providing oversight of graduate assistants working with men's and women's tennis.
The Rockets also have announced the hiring of AJ Garcia as an assistant athletic trainer. Garcia joins the staff after serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at South Carolina. He will primarily work with the football program at UT.
"Adam has quickly proven himself as a fantastic athletic trainer who will ensure that our football program receive the best medical care. AJ is an excellent addition to out team and we are happy to have him on our staff," continued Jones.
In conjunction with The University of Toledo Medical Center, Sheena Long has been hired as a physical therapist/athletic trainer. Long recently served in a similar role at Northwestern University and will handle many long-term rehabilitations for Toledo student-athletes, while working with the men's and women's golf teams.
"As an athletic trainer and a physical therapist, Sheena brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and skill to our team," Jones said. "I am very excited to have the privilege to continue directing a fantastic group of medical professionals and I could not be happier with the direction of our program."
