TOLEDO, Ohio - A trip out west to the state of California, along with single matches at Michigan and at home vs. Notre Dame highlight the 2017 Toledo women's soccer schedule, recently released by third-year head coach TJ Buchholz.
"We have a strong schedule for the 2017 season," said Buchholz. "We believe in challenging our players to play the best teams in the country out of conference to prepare us for a difficult MAC slate."
The year will start with a preseason exhibition match at Big Ten member Michigan State on Aug. 10 in East Lansing, before the Rockets' open the regular season at Detroit Mercy on Aug. 18. Toledo defeated UDM, 1-0, last season on a goal in the 81st minute on the road. UT then welcomes Canisius to Scott Park for its home opener on Aug. 20.
Toledo will then travel to Big Ten member Michigan on Aug. 27 before venturing to the "Golden State" to compete against UC Riverside on Sept. 1 and UC Irvine on Sept. 3.
"Playing in California against two top Big West Conference teams is going to be a great experience and challenge for our players," said Buchholz. "We have a few players on our team from California and it will be nice to play in front of their families on this trip."
Back in Ohio, Toledo visits Cleveland State (Sept. 8) before it entertains Atlantic Coast Conference power Notre Dame on Sept. 10 at Scott Park.
"We are very excited to host a perennial Top-10 team like Notre Dame," said Buchholz. "This will be a great challenge for our players and one that we are looking forward to this fall."
A meeting with Horizon League participant Valparaiso will close out the non-conference schedule on Sept. 17.
The Rockets open Mid-American Conference play with home matches against Miami (Sept. 22) and Ball State (Sept. 24). Toledo will then venture away from the friendly confines of Scott Park for contests at Northern Illinois (Sept. 29), Western Michigan (Oct. 1) and Central Michigan (Oct. 5).
Three more home matches - Eastern Michigan (Oct. 8), Akron (Oct. 13), Buffalo (Oct. 15) - and a pair on the road at Kent State (Oct. 19) and Ohio (Oct. 22) will follow before the regular season concludes with the I-75 Rivalry match against Bowling Green (Oct. 26) at Scott Park.
