KENT, Ohio - Junior captain Regan Price knocked in a rebound off a 109th-minute free kick to send Toledo to the championship match of the Mid-American Conference Tournament with a 2-1 win over No. 2 Ball State on Friday afternoon at Dix Stadium.Â
Price's first goal of the season could not have come at a better time. Senior Chiara Paradiso took the free kick just outside of the box and went for goal. Kent State goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel made the initial save but the rebound went directly to Price's right foot and subsequently into the back of the net.
Toledo (11-7-3)Â found itself behind early as the Cardinals found the back of the net in the ninth minute. Toledo redshirt freshman goalkeeper Madison Perrin stopped the first shot but could not corral the rebound. Allison Abbe deposited the loose ball to give BSU a 1-0 lead.
The Rockets battled back to tie the match, 1-1, in the 56th minute. Junior captain Hannah Scafaria broke free on the left side and centered the ball to senior Sophie Pohl. Pohl made the extra pass to an open Alena Sidwell and the junior was able to find the back of the net.
Ball State (11-7-3) threatened to retake the lead but Perrin made a save in the 63rd minute to keep the match knotted. UT had a chance to go ahead in the 68th minute but a header by sophomore Kelsey Kraft bounced just wide to the right. The two teams would head to overtime deadlocked, 1-1.
The Cardinals controlled much of the first overtime period, but Perrin made three of her four saves to force a second extra session.Â
With penalty kicks imminent, a foul by Ball State set up the Rockets with a scoring opportunity. Paradiso rifled the free kick from 25 yards away and Price cleaned up the carom to send the Rockets to the finals.Â
The Rockets were out-shot 13-12 but had 10 corner kicks compared to just a pair for BSU.Â
The Rockets will take on the winner of No. 1 seed Kent State and No. 4 seed Bowling Green for the MAC title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The championship match is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m.Â
