TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo track & field program has added Adrian Ghioroaie to its coaching staff, head coach Linh Nguyen announced on Thursday. Ghioroaie will coach the Rockets in jumps, sprints, hurdles and multi-events.
"I'm very excited to welcome Adrian and his family to Toledo," said Nguyen. "There's no doubting his abilities and I believe that he will help us reach the top of the Mid-American Conference and beyond."Â
Ghioroaie comes to Toledo after coaching at Auburn University since the 2013-14 season. During his time at Auburn, Ghioroaie coached 11 All-American selections, including DJ Smith, who cleared 7-3.25 in the high jump in 2015 to become Auburn's first conference champion in the event since 2007.
"I'm very happy and grateful to coach Nguyen for the opportunity to coach at the University of Toledo," stated Ghioroaie. "It's a great place and we share a common vision on how to be successful at the conference and national level."
A native of Bucharest, Romania, Ghioroaie's coaching career has included stints at Southern Mississippi, Kent State and Jacksonville State. During his time at Southern Miss, Ghioroaie was named the 2011 South Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Under Ghioroaie's tutelage, Southern Miss long jumper Tori Bowie secured the school's first national championship at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships; Ganna Demydova finished third in the triple jump; and Ke Aira Jones took fourth in the high jump to help the Golden Eagles to a 10th-place finish. Bowie went on to defend her national championship in the 2011 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Ghioroaie began his athletic career at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he was part of the 2002 Western Athletic Conference Championship team. That year, he was the WAC indoor champion in the triple jump and the runner-up in the long jump. He went on to place third in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships to finish the season as an All-American.
He transferred to Kent State for the 2004-05 seasons and was a three-time MAC Champion in the triple jump and 4x100 meter relay. He later helped coach his alma mater to a MAC Men's Track and Field Championship and a pair of MAC Women's Track and Field Championships from 2008-10
Ghioroaie earned his bachelor's degree in science in human performance from Kent State, and his master of arts in teaching from the University of the Cumberlands. He lives in Toledo with his wife Alina and daughter Amalia.
