TOLEDO, OH - Junior Mae Tshitenge suffered a season-ending knee injury during practice last week, head coach Tricia Cullop announced on Monday. Tshitenge tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial collateral ligament (MCL) and meniscus in her right knee on Wednesday, Nov. 9. As a result of the injury, she will miss the entire 2016-17 campaign and seek a redshirt.Â
"We're very disappointed for Mae because she has worked extremely hard and has had a great attitude since arriving on campus," Cullop said. "She has done everything we've asked of her and she had a very productive exhibition game. There is not anything more we could have asked of her. It's unfortunate, but it happened. We now have to focus on what we can control, which is getting her healthy and preparing her to have surgery in the near future."
Tshitenge, who totaled 11 points in only eight minutes against Lock Haven in UT's exhibition contest on Saturday, Nov. 5, transferred from Redlands Community College and has two years of eligibility remaining for the Midnight Blue & Gold.Â
Tshitenge started all 29 games for the Cougars in 2015-16, averaging a team-high 13.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.3 steals, en route to collecting first-team all-conference and first-team NJCAA All-Region II accolades. She shot 53.3 percent (153-of-287) from the field, including 43.9 percent (29-of-66) from three-point range, and 81.9 percent (59-of-72) from the charity stripe. Tshitenge helped the team post a 23-8 overall record, including a 13-5 ledger in the division. She also poured in at least 10 points on 25 occasions throughout the year, including a season-high 22 points against Hill College.
