KALAMAZOO, MI – The Toledo men's tennis team concluded its weekend at the Mid-American Conference Invitational on Sunday in Kalamazoo.
"Even though we lost some close singles matches on the final day, we showed a lot more toughness and maturity than we did here a year ago," said head coach Al Wermer. "Our doubles showed definite promise and we were pleased with Omar, Thawin and Juan's singles progress."
Sophomore Juan Carranza claimed a pair of two-set victories in Flight 6 Singles but lost to Binghampton's Sebastian Quios in a tough three sets (5-7, 6-2, 14-12) in the championship match.
Carranza then paired up with sophomore Luka Vitosevic to place third in Flight 3 Doubles after defeating Buffalo in two sets and Ball State in a close 8-7 (11-9) tiebreaker.
Juniors Omar Espinosa and Stephen Miller collected a pair of wins in Flight 2 Doubles as well. The duo beat Northern Illinois, 8-7, before downing Western Michigan, 8-3.
This concludes the Rockets' competition for the season. They will start back up on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 20-21 when they welcome Dayton and Valparaiso to the Glass City, respectively.
