TOLEDO, OH – The University of Toledo football program hosted its second annual "Victory Day" for cognitively and physically impaired students from Toledo area schools in the Glass Bowl Saturday, Aug. 22.
Â
"There is no better way for our football program to start our season," said UT head coach Matt Campbell. "Every young participant who came out here today is a winner."
Victory Day allows special needs students to have their "moment in the sun" on the football field. Each student was partnered with a UT football player who served as his/her mentor for the day. Victory Day athletes participated in a number of simulated game-day activities, assisted by Rocket football players. Participants wore Rocket team jerseys and were presented with medals after the game to commemorate their victory. Toledo football players, cheerleaders, Rocky the Rocket and marching band members were present show their support.
Â
"Every person on the field today was a member of the Rocket football team," claimed senior DE Trent Voss. "It's a really special feeling to be able to provide this experience for them."
Victory Day was started in 2010 by Aaron Segedi, a teacher, football coach and cancer survivor from Trenton, MI, whose life was saved thanks to a liver donation from his sister, Rhonda. Since then, the Victory Day program has been adopted by high schools and universities in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
