MOUNT PLEASANT, MI – Toledo (9-11-0, 5-6-0) clinched the No. 7 seed in the Mid-American Conference tournament by defeating Central Michigan (6-10-2, 5-5-1) on Thursday, 2-0 at the CMU Soccer Complex.Â
Toledo broke open the scoring in the 34th minute of the contest when freshman Italia Biondi chipped the CMU keeper from the top of the box. In the second half, junior Lauren Taylor found the back of the net in the 70th minute after a rip from outside the box for her first marker of the year. Junior Brooke Maletic was credited with the helper.
"The goal from Lauren was an absolute Rocket," first-year head coach TJ Buchholz said. "She played a great game and I'm proud of her."
The backline once again played in top form and only allowed one shot on goal during the contest, which allowed freshman keeper Katie Wilson to pick up her fifth victory of the season. The Rockets controlled the pace in the majority of the contest, and outshot the Chippewas 12-6 in the match.
UT finished the regular season with 15 points, good for the No. 7 seed in the MAC Tournament. UT will face Western Michigan in the first round of tournament.
"We have a difficult contest against a strong Western Michigan team coming up," Buchholz said. "This team is hungry and is capable of doing something special."
Toledo begins the tournament at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1:00 p.m.
