WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - Junior Kristen Lynn's goal in the 94th minute lifted Toledo to a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Purdue in Friday's season opener at the Varsity Soccer Complex. With the extra-period win, UT improves to 11-3-2 all-time in season-opening matches, including an impressive 7-1-2 under 10th-year Head Coach Brad Evans.
"This match was a lot of fun to watch," Evans said. "Our team played hard and everybody on the roster contributed."
Lynn converted a penalty kick at 93:29 to give UT (1-0-0) its second all-time victory against a Big Ten opponent and first since the 1996 season. The two-year letterwinner capitalized on a handball inside the 18-yard box by knocking her shot just past the outstretched arms of Purdue goalkeeper Carianne Betts for the winning tally. The Rockets' only other triumph over a Big Ten foe occurred on Sept. 13, 1996 when they blanked Ohio State at home, 1-0.
"I thought the penalty kick was earned, and Kristen did a good job of finishing," said Evans, whose squad played Purdue to a 1-1 double-overtime draw back on Sept. 17, 2006 in the only other meeting between the schools.
The Midnight Blue & Gold was outshot 16-9 by the Boilermakers (0-1-0), but junior netminder Vicki Traven was credited with eight saves to preserve the shutout. With today's effort, Traven passes former Rocket goalkeeper Jen Whipple (2003-03) for first place in school history with 17 career shutouts.
"Vicki looked extremely sharp today," Evans said. "She made some key saves."
Added Evans, "I thought we showed great improvement from our scrimmage to this match. Purdue is a good team and they put us under a lot of pressure at different points, but I thought we held up well."
The Rockets return to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 22 when they travel to Dayton to battle the Flyers. The opening whistle from Baujan Field is slated for 1:00 p.m.
