YPSILANTI, MI - Toledo's cross country teams competed in the 2008 Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday Nov. 1 in Ypsilanti, MI. The Rocket women finished in sixth place while the men came in eighth.
Karen Sovacool was the top UT runner on the women's side, crossing the finish line in 17:50 -- good for 17th place overall.20. Finishing second and third among Rockets were Lindsay Toussant (18:08.80) and Dagna Sztykiel (18.19.6). Natalie Perzanowski and Audra Brown were the fourth- and fifth-place runners for UT and finished one-tenth of a second within each other. Perzanowski completed the race in 18:23.50 and Brown clocked in at 18:23.60.
"It was a very good race for us," said Head Coach Kevin Hadsell. "We ran tough, our pack ran really well and we had a lot of personal records. I feel we will do really well in a couple of weeks at regionals."
On the men's side, Elisha Kipchumba was the first Rocket to cross the finish line in the race. Kipchumba completed the course in 25:29.20 and 24th place overall. Ken Kiptoo Samoei (25:29.80) and Chris Wall (26:08.60) were the second and third UT runners to finish the race, respectively. Barnaba Kiprotich (26:32.30) and Jonathon DeWitt (26:37.30) rounded out Toledo's top five.
"I am disappointed that we only lost to Buffalo and Akron by a few points," Hadsell said. "The silver lining is that our guys ran really well and we are in a better position than we were last year."
Miami won the women's title while Eastern Michigan garnered the men's title.
Next on the schedule for the Rockets are the NCAA Regionals on Saturday Nov. 15 at West Layfayette, IN beginning at 11 a.m.
