Toledo, OH - The University of Toledo softball team came up short against Akron 6-5 today in Mid-American Conference action at Scott Park. The Zips sweep the season-series with the win and drop the Rockets to 11-23 overall, 2-5 in the MAC.
Akron scored one run in the first and three in the second to take an early 4-0 lead, before the Rockets came back in their half of the second to take a 5-4 lead.
A costly error by UA second baseman Jamie Stanclift with two outs on a Gina Muratori line drive kept the inning alive. The Rockets took advantage of the miscue, as Erica Singer promptly smacked a bases-clearing double to give the Rockets a 5-4 lead.
Akron scored two runs in the fourth and the Rockets were unable to recover, despite loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
The Rockets received a scare in the third inning when a hard liner by Stanclift hit UT third baseman Whitney Erickson in the face. The game was delayed for several minutes as medical personnel attended to Erickson. Erickson was alert and taken to the hospital for tests and observation.
Singer led UT at the plate by going 4-4 with three RBI. Leslie Stong was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored to contribute to the Rocket cause.Sierra Pereira struck out three and gave up two earned runs on the mound to fall to 5-11 on the year.
Akron outhit Toledo 10-9 and both teams were hurt by two errors each.
"We got behind the eight-ball early by giving up four runs in the first two innings," Head Coach Jo Ann Gordon said. "It's tough to come back when you fall behind early. We had our chances, we just couldn't get enough clutch hits."
Toledo comes right back to action on Tuesday when it travels to Columbus to take on Ohio State in a doubleheader beginning at 5 P.M.
