Toledo, OH - The University of Toledo softball team lost a tough 5-3 decision to Akron today at the Softball Complex at Scott Park. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 11-22 overall, 2-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The two teams do battle in the final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Scott Park.
Toledo fell behind early as the Zips plated three runs in the first inning. Toledo started to get on track in the third with a lead-off double by Andrea Wabol. Denise Van Vossen followed a Leslie Stong single with a base knock of her own to score Wabol and bring the Rockets to within 3-1.
A third consecutive single by Valerie Moxim loaded the bases with just one out, but Alison Hess popped out and Megan McCauley struck out to end the threat.
Toledo's last chance for a comeback came in its final at-bat in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Danielle Schneider singled to send Brie Ford, who came on to pinch run for Sara Agnew after a single, to third. Stong hit a sacrifice fly to score Schneider and move the runners up a base, leaving the door open for a two-out rally.
After a Van Vossen single that moved the runners and kept the Rockets' hopes alive, Schneider crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Akron hurler Megan MacKenzie. Valerie Moxim represented the tying run and walked, leaving Erica Singer with a chance to be the hero. MacKenzie, however, picked up her 10th strikeout of the day and sent the Zips away victorious.
""We didn't have enough clutch hitting today," Head Coach Jo Ann Gordon said. "We fought hard, we just couldn't get it done. Steph (Moore) didn't pitch bad, we just couldn't get the bats going."
The Rockets leading hitter, Gina Muratori, was out due to injury, hurting the UT cause. Stong and Van Vossen each had two hits and an RBI to lead the Rockets at the plate. Stephanie Moore got the loss on the mound, giving up three earned runs and falling to 6-12. Sierra Pereira came in and pitched two innings of no-hit ball, striking out two.
