Bowling Green, OH - Senior April Williams won the triple jump in leading the University of Toledo women's track team to a sixth-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Track & Field Championships in Bowling Green on Saturday.
Williams' leap of 42 feet 5 ½ inches set the school record and was the fourth-best leap in MAC history. Williams, who won the long jump on Friday, earned the honor of the meet's "Outstanding Field Event Performer." Her triple jump performance was almost two feet better than the next best distance.
"April's accomplishments at the meet were amazing," said head coach Kevin Hadsell. "She had two of the top jumps in the country. It's a credit to her hard work, especially when you consider she didn't evn score at the MAC meet as a freshman three years ago." Williams has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the long jump and triple jump, and is likely to compete in both events.
Toledo's sixth-place finish is a big jump from a year ago when the Rockets took 11th place. They upped their team point total from 16 points to 51 ¾.
The Rockets next will compete at the Notre Dame Last Chance Invitational next Friday and Saturday, the last meet before the NCAA Championship Meet in two weeks.
