EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Stefon Jackson scored 20 points to help Texas-El Paso to a 92-71 win over Toledo on Saturday in the consolation game of the Sun Bowl Tournament.
Kevin Henderson finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Miners (7-6). Also scoring in double figures were Marvin Kilgore with 16 points, Darren Clarke with 12 and Maurice Thomas with 11.
Henderson and Clarke both contributed to the 34 points scored by the UTEP bench, compared to 18 points from the Rockets' bench.
Malik Alvin's three steals led the Miners, who forced Toledo (4-7) into 27 turnovers. UTEP scored 39 points off turnovers, to the Rockets' 15.
"We were too careless with the basketball tonight and didn't defend like we did earlier in the season," Toledo Head Coach Stan Joplin said. "UTEP took advantage of that and was able to get a lot of open looks and that really hurt us. We're going to get back to work after Christmas and try to get back to playing the way we need to to be successful."
Senior guard Justin Ingram scored a game-high 24 points for Toledo. Senior forward Keonta Howell scored 13 and senior forward Florentino Valencia added 12. Sophomore guard Ridley Johnson finished with a season-high nine points and a career-best nine rebounds.
"UTEP really took it to us tonight and that's very disturbing after our loss to Drake the night before," Joplin added. "We're definitely going to need to get some things corrected so games like this don't happen again."
Toledo returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 30 with a non-conference game at Oakland in a game that tips off at noon on FSN Detroit. The Rockets will open Mid-American Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 6 at Ball State.
