Toledo, OH - Toledo defeated Marshall tonight in its first Mid-American Conference opener, 3-1, under the lights at Anthony Wayne High School. With tonight's victory, the Rockets improve to 4-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the league.
"Marshall is a good team," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "Chris (Kane) has done a good job with their young players. There were times when they controlled the pace of the game, but I think our girls responded well."
The first goal of the game for the Rockets came just 7:14 into the first half when sophomore Diana Ginley maneuvered past two defenders for her first career goal. Ginley responded again in the second half when she dribbled in from 25 yards out to score her second goal of the season, unassisted.
"Diana has finally been rewarded," Evans said. "She's been playing well and I'm happy that she could finish out this game with a pair of scores."
Toledo's insurance goal came at 20:24 into the second half on a corner kick by junior Sarah Crane. Crane found redshirt freshman Sarah Schulte in the box, whose shot found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Marshall's lone goal came from Jennifer Short off a throw-in from teammate Kassie Hollman to cut the Rockets' lead to 3-1. The Thundering Herd ended the game with 10 shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Ashleigh Woods ended her night with seven saves.
UT wrapped up its night with 13 shots on goal, while sophomore goalkeeper Jen Whipple recorded four saves.
"We had a great first game to start our conference schedule," Evans commented. "But that's all it is, a start. We still have 11 more games to go, but it was a great start."
Toledo will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 19 when it entertains Ohio. The game is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Anthony Wayne High School.
