TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (10-26, 2-9 MAC) could not take advantage of a solid outing by junior pitcher Kurt Woeste on Saturday afternoon as it dropped its eighth one-run decision of the 2004 campaign with a 3-2 setback to Eastern Michigan (22-14, 8-3 MAC) at Scott Park.
Woeste (1-6) went eight innings for the Rockets allowing three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Senior Mitch Hayes also recorded a solid performance for Toledo by coming out of the bullpen to pitch a perfect ninth.
Toledo tallied both of its runs in its first at-bat to take an early 2-0 lead. With two outs in the frame, UT recorded back-to-back RBI's by senior LF Shawn Hurst and sophomore 3B Dan Stong to establish an early lead.
The two runs would be all the Rockets could muster off EMU starter Will Stewardson, who pitched a complete-game, five hitter.
Eastern Michigan cut the lead to 2-1 in the second on a RBI single up the middle by Matt Moffett.
EMU then tied the score in the third on a balk by Woeste and scored the game-winning run in the fifth on a RBI single by Derrick Peterson.
Despite another heartbreaking loss, Toledo senior CF Sean Dobson etched his name in the Rockets' annals. Dobson laced his team-leading 18th double down the left field line in the sixth inning to become UT's single season record holder for two-base hits. The Eastpointe, MI native passed Tim Kubacki, who hit 17 doubles in 1982.
The two teams finish off the three-game series tomorrow afternoon, April 25, with a 1:00 p.m. start.
