Toledo, OH - Toledo (5-8-0, 3-5-0 MAC) saw its bid for a berth in this year's MAC Tournament suffer a damaging blow with a 2-1 loss this afternoon at Northern Illinois (2-10-1, 1-6-1 MAC). It was the Rockets' third straight defeat with all of their setbacks coming on the road.
The Rockets were outshot by the Huskies by a 27-17 margin marking the first time in 38 contests that the Huskies have taken more attempts than their opponents.
NIU midfielder Angeline Impelido opened the scoring by scoring on a penalty kick just 3:05 into the contest. A Toledo foul in front of the net during one of six NIU corner kicks set up the opportunity and Impelido connected for her first collegiate goal.
Toledo came back at the 22:11 mark when Nichole Williams ran on to Robin Davidson's lead pass and knocked in her third goal of the year. Williams' pass from the left wing found Williams behind her mark on the right side of the net and NIU goalkeeper Leigh Steigerwald could not keep the shot off the line.
Northern Illinois responded with 6:14 left before intermission as Denise Papke sent a 15-yard volley into the corner of the net for the go-ahead goal, her first of the season. Megan Kolkay sent a crossing pass from the right corner to a waiting Papke for the one-time shot which proved to be the match-winner.
"This was a very tough loss for us," UT Head Coach Brad Evans said. "The penalty call that resulted in their first goal was a really difficult one to take. They were really energized the goal and it set the tone for the rest of the game. We were under a lot of pressure the rest of the first half, but we played hard and created good scoring chances. The bottom line for us is that we just didn't make plays today."
Toledo returns home on Sunday afternoon to host Western Michigan (5-7-1, 4-4-1 MAC) in a 1:00 p.m. matchup at Scott Park.
