Toledo, OH - Brad Evans was named head women's soccer coach at the University of Toledo, UT Athletic Director Pete Liske announced today. Evans formerly was the men's and women's soccer coach at Ashland University, a Division II school in Ashland, OH.
Evans replaces R.J. Anderson, who resigned in January after six seasons as head coach of the Rockets.
"I'm tremendously excited to come to Toledo," said Evans. "I'm looking forward to the challenge of taking over the program and helping the players grow, both on the field and off. I'm eager to get started."
Evans' women's squad compiled an impressive 37-5 record in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, 67-26-2 overall, in his five years at the helm of the Eagles. Ashland was GLIAC champion and made the NCAA Tournament in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. The Eagles advanced to the NCAA regionals in 1999 and 2000, and made the Final Four in 1998.
"Obviously we're thrilled to have someone with Brad's background lead our women's soccer program," said Liske. "His record at Ashland makes him a proven winner. We're confident he will bring that same dedication to excellence to Toledo."
Evans began his coaching career at Ashland, working as an assistant women's soccer coach from 1994-95. In 1996, he took over the position as the head coach for both the men's and women's teams.
In Evans' third season as head coach in 1998, the Eagles finished with a 17-3-1 record, advancing to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. Evans was named Division II Regional Coach of the Year, and was a National Coach of the Year finalist. In 1999, Ashland went 16-2-0 and was ranked No. 2 in the nation in the final regular-season poll. This past season the Eagles were 14-3-1 and won their fourth straight league title.
A native of Hudson, OH, Evans played soccer at Wooster, earning a bachelor's degree in 1992. Evans was a four-year letterman who helped lead the Scots to two NCAA Division III playoff berths. He later earned his master's degree in education from Ashland in 1997.
After graduation, Evans began his coaching career with the Emerald Soccer Club in Hudson, OH. In that capacity he worked with Tim Liesko, U.S. national team assistant coach and Olympic head coach. Evans also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Hudson High School.
Evans is on the 2000 Region II Ohio Development Program staff and is the state coach for Ohio North. This past year he was a featured clinician at the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association meeting and was a featured speaker at the Columbus Crew Coaches' Corner. He was the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association all-star game selection committee chair for women and is the 2000-2001 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coaches liaison.
Evans and his wife, Kristen, currently reside in Ashland.
