UT REPORT CARD: Nearly Half of All UT Student-Athletes Earn 3.0 GPA or Better in Fall Semester (Jan. 11)

Toledo, OH - University of Toledo Athletic Director Pete Liske announced today that more than 47 percent (175 of 370) of UT student-athletes achieved a 3.0 grade point average or better for the 1999 fall semester. Liske also announced that nine of UT's 15 sport programs had team GPA's of 3.0 or above last spring.
These figures represent an increase from the 1998 fall semester. During the fall of 1998, 45 percent of student athletes had a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The department's overall GPA was 2.890, an improvement from last fall's 2.871.
"We congratulate the student-athletes for their academic achievements during the fall semester. This continues our trend of upward movement for both individual and team GPA's," said Liske. "While the increase from last fall was slight, it still supports our goal of raising the bar. It's great to be associated with positive and productive young people."
Leading the way last fall was the women's cross country team with a combined GPA of 3.615. Other squads with a 3.0+ GPA were softball (3.428), women's volleyball (3.385), women's basketball (3.330), women's soccer (3.256), women's track (3.190), men's tennis (3.172), women's swimming (3.149), women's golf (3.107) and men's golf (3.013).
Of the 175 student-athletes who earned a 3.0+ grade point average last semester, 15 of them earned a perfect 4.0. The women's cross country team alone prduced four student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA last fall.
