No one comes closer to exhibiting the love and passion for his alma mater and the Rockets than Sylvester "Sonny" Smith. A former Rocket football and baseball player, Smith has served as president of the Varsity 'T' Club for many years, and has led the organization to high levels of success. Membership in the organization is near 400; a new $300,000 pavilion was added to the campus in 1998 to highlight the achievements of past athletes; and a new endowment fund has been created to honor and memorialize deceased athletes and coaches, with income from the fund providing revenue for UT's Olympic sports programs. Through Smith's leadership, the Varsity "T" Club has grown and will continue to be an important support group for Rocket athletics.
