A two-time letterwinner in baseball, Neal Mersch ranks first in UT's record book in win-lost percentage for a career (16-3) and for a season (9-1), and ranks seventh in career earned run average (2.86). As a junior in 1972, Mersch recorded a 9-1 record with a 2.23 ERA, the seventh-best mark in school history. He went 7-2 with a 3.40 ERA in 1973, earning first-team All-MAC honors. After graduating, Mersch played in the New York Yankees' and Texas Rangers' farm systems. He went 11-0 with the Oneonta Yankees in 1973 and 15-3 in 1974.
