Shapiro earned All-America honors at UT and later wrestled for the U.S. national teams that competed in Russia and Poland. He went an impressive 26-2 his senior year in 1975 to finish the season as the 118-pound MAC champion, the only Rocket to ever win the MAC Championship at the lightweight class. He earned the Mid-American Conference Player of the Meet at the MAC where he pinned his opponent in the finals in four minutes and 46 seconds. Shapiro finished third at the NCAA's that season, earning All-America honors.
