Jim Day played football for the Rockets from 1935-37. A two-way player, Day starred as an end on both defense and started every game during his three-year varsity career. He played on teams that were a combined 14-11-1, including the 1935 squad that went 6-2-1 and outscored opponents 186-32. During his UT career, Day was involved in some gridiron heroics, scoring the game-winning touchdown in contest against Ohio Wesleyan and Dayton in 1937. In 1938 he was named to an all-star team that played the Chicago Bears. "He was a leader," one of his nominators said of Day. "He was an exceptional athlete in all sports." Day was also a member of the varsity track, baseball, and basketball team. He was outfielder and catcher for the baseball team, while the shot put and discus where his track specialties. Day earned a master of education from the University of Toledo in 1967. He was a teacher, principal, and administrator for over 30 years before retiring in 1976.
