He won varsity letters in basketball in 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925 and captained the 1924 and 1925 teams. Although no records exist for names of varsity track men in these years, newspaper clippings indicate he also was a star field events man in track and field. While few statistics exist for individuals of his era, newspaper clippings of his day referred to him with the superlative:" ...Toledo's 'Big Stick', the most outstanding player on the Toledo offense...always relied upon to gain good ground and also did the team's punting...Stick, playing with his shoulder in a cast, plunged over from the six-yard line...'Big Stick,' the U's fleet backfield runner, played a great all around games as he has done every game. "The 1925 basketball team that he captained finished 13-7 and won the Northwest Ohio Intercollegiate Association championship. After graduation, he distinguished himself in further athletic competition as a football player in semi-professional and professional games that preceded formation of the National Football League.
