Frank Lauterbur

Francis "Frank" Lauterbur served as head football coach and athletic director at UT from 1963 to 1970. Lauterbur led the Rockets to the first 23 wins of the famous 35-0 streak of 1969-71. During his tenure he lead the Rockets to three Mid-American Conference Championships in 1967, 1969, and 1970. Lauterbur’s 1969 and 1970 teams were ranked in the top 20 and won Tangerine Bowl championships. He was named MAC Coach of the Year and Ohio Coach of the Year in 1967, 1969 and 1970. Fifty-five players recruited by Lauterbur were either first- or second-team All-MAC selections, while four of those players earned All-America honors. As athletic director, Lauterbur hired some of the greatest coaches in UT history, including Brian Eisner (men’s tennis), Dick Wilson (wrestling), Bob Nichols (men’s basketball) and Barney Francis (men’s golf). Lauterbur also served as head football coach at Iowa from 1972-74, and coached in the NFL with the Baltimore Colts, Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks.
