Don Wem won three Mid-American Conference wrestling titles in three different divisions during his UT career. He was named an All-American in 1955. That same year he competed in the NCAA wrestling tournament in the 177-pound weight class, finishing 4th. He also finished runner-up at the National AAU and Freestyle and Greco-Roman tournaments that year. Following college, he entered the Army Airborne and continued to compete, winning a number of national tournaments. During the course of his high school, college, and military wrestling career, he compiled an overall record of 323-21 and won 12 tournaments.
